SHANGHAI, 16 JULY 2026 — As supply chains become more digital and interconnected, food businesses are under pressure to strengthen traceability, maintain consistent standards and manage risk across complex operations.
These challenges were the focus of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) China Working Group’s 2026 Local Group General Meeting in Shanghai on 5 June, bringing together more than 80 representatives from across the food sector to explore practical solutions to these shared challenges.
Digital tools support greater supply chain visibility
Digitalisation is helping organisations improve oversight, traceability and quality assurance across the value chain.
Representatives from Mondelez Greater China, Walmart China and Taotian Group shared perspectives on how digital solutions, global standards and end-to-end management approaches are being applied to strengthen quality oversight and supply chain visibility.

Advancing certification, traceability and food safety culture
Discussions also covered progress across key GFSI China initiatives, including accredited certification, digital labelling and traceability, and food safety culture.
Updates included findings from the 2026 GFSI Accredited Certification Development Report in China and the GFSI China Food Digital Labelling and Traceability Survey Report, alongside ongoing work on food safety culture.
Connecting regional insights with global priorities
Industry challenges cross borders, requiring insights from different markets to inform how the sector evolves. The discussions in Shanghai highlighted how regional developments contribute to GFSI’s broader programme of work.
Elizabeth Andoh-Kesson, GFSI Director, shared updates on global developments, while Chen Chao, General Manager of Quality at Wumart Group and Metro Retail Group, highlighted the role of GFSI-recognised certification in supporting trust in food safety management systems.
The involvement of e-commerce and retail platforms reflects the evolving food ecosystem. Following JD.com’s recent membership of The Consumer Goods Forum, Luo Aijun, General Manager of JD.com’s Innovative Retail Quality Control Department, joined the GFSI China Working Group Steering Committee.
Looking ahead to GFSI China Day
These themes will continue to be explored at GFSI China Day, taking place on 10 September 2026 as part of CGF China Day. Bringing together food safety professionals from across the food value chain, the event will provide a platform to exchange insights on digitalisation, certification and supply chain traceability.
