PARIS, 12 September 2023 — The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI; the Coalition), The Consumer Goods Forum’s Coalition of Action on food safety, welcomes three new industry experts to the GFSI Steering Committee.

The new members of the Steering Committee, who will help shape the strategic direction of the Coalition, drive collaboration between retailers and manufacturers, ensure an open and transparent relationship with key stakeholders, and help deliver GFSI’s  mission of safe food for people everywhere, are:

  • Mark Beaumont, Vice President, Quality and Food Safety Standards and Risk Management, Danone
  • Mahirwan Bhagia, Chief Food Safety & Quality Assurance Officer, PepsiCo
  • Olivier Mignot, Vice President, Global Quality Management, Nestlé

Mark Beaumont said: “Food safety matters to everyone, from farm to factory to fork. The Committee drives change and further innovation necessary to keep food supplies secure, abundant and people safe both now and in the future.”

Mahirwan Bhagia added: “The GFSI Steering Committee is unique because it forges high-impact food safety programs through collaboration. It’s a great opportunity to help drive change and move in the direction of globally harmonized food safety standards.”

Olivier Mignot commented: “I am happy to join this group of leaders from the food industry who are passionate about ensuring food safety is a priority and follows a path of continuous improvement around the globe.”

The GFSI Steering Committee is made up of senior food safety leaders from global food and drink manufacturers and retailers who are all members of The Consumer Goods Forum. In line with GFSI Governance Rules, the Steering Committee will be open to receiving new applications twice a year, from eligible retail and manufacturer members of the GFSI Coalition of Action on food safety.

Each of the Steering Committee members commit to supporting the three strategic priorities of GFSI: harmonising and benchmarking of food safety certification programmes, food safety capability building and public private partnerships.

Committee Co-Sponsors at CGF-Board level are Dirk van de Put of Mondelēz and Pieter Boone of Pick n Pay. GFSI Co-Chairs are Howard Popoola from retailer The Kroger Co. and Mark Fryling from manufacturer General Mills.

GFSI Director Erica Sheward concluded: “We warmly welcome the new members of the GFSI Steering Committee, who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from the world’s largest food and  drinks manufacturers. They share our commitment to progress our work in all areas of our strategy   and to advance our plans to drive transformational improvements to  food safety systems globally.”
