GFSI is pleased to invite all stakeholders to participate in a global public consultation for Part III of the GFSI Benchmarking Requirements Version 8. This version, which will be published in February 2020 in time for GFSI’s 20th birthday, marks the first full revision of the Benchmarking Requirements since 2017. We hope you will assist us in making this document as well-informed and applicable as its predecessors, while taking this version to the next level.

The needs of the food industry change every day, and GFSI works relentlessly to evolve in step. We drive harmonisation and continuous improvement in food safety systems through our extensive benchmarking and recognition work. By regularly developing new versions of the Benchmarking Requirements, we can ensure that GFSI and our stakeholders stay up to date with shifting trends in food safety and the food industry.

Why a Public Consultation?

Every benchmarking process includes a public consultation open to all stakeholders, in keeping with GFSI’s commitment to transparency and collaboration. Public consultations allow us to best involve food safety practitioners and experts in the development of this multi-stakeholder document, which impacts a vast cross-section of the food industry.

What Is New in Version 8?

While the previous edition, V7, received two addenda in the years after its publication, V8 is a more complete, fully-updated revision than V7.1 and V7.2. This revision incorporates new elements that have taken centre stage in the food safety conversation, including but not limited to:

  • Food safety culture
  • Compulsory testing of the traceability system
  • Product development
  • Regular site and equipment inspection
  • Controls of intakes
  • Reviewed scope numbering and definitions in alignment with ISO22000

As a world-class, globally applicable document, V8 aligns with internationally recognised standards such as those set out by Codex Alimentarius and ISO. We have also taken the time to simplify and harmonise the language of the document, removing ambiguities to ease practical use.

How To Participate

We are beginning the public consultation for V8 with Part III of the document. The public consultation for Parts I, II and IV will open in September.
