In December 2018, the United Nations General Assembly voted to recognise 7 June as World Food Safety Day. From 2019 on, World Food Safety Day will be an annual opportunity to draw international attention to the importance of safe food. In collaboration with Codex Alimentarius, GFSI embarked on a campaign to spread awareness of World Food Safety Day and its mission.
A great momentum was seen from around the world and across the supply chain on this first installment of the World Food Safety Day, with a wide cross-section of stakeholders participating in this UN-recognised day to raise awareness around food safety. Through internal and external events, social media, video messages, photos and more, the global community jumped in with enthusiastic support.
At the GFSI Conference 2019 in Nice, GFSI Director Véronique Discours-Buhot invited stakeholders to illustrate their own dedication to safe food through videos or photographs and share them via Twitter. The submissions were collected into a mashup video published on the first World Food Safety Day.
Thank you to all who participated and filled this video with smiling and familiar faces in the food safety fight! Press play to see them put the “happy” in “Happy World Food Safety Day.” The GFSI community welcomed the mashup with enthusiasm and used the video to wish friends and colleagues a happy World Food Safety Day and congratulate those who work tirelessly throughout the year, each doing their part to ensure that food on tables around the globe is safe to eat.
Submissions are still being collected in preparation for the GFSI Conference 2020, which will coincide with GFSI’s 20th anniversary. Stakeholders are invited to submit photos and videos that demonstrate their food safety commitment to @myGFSI with the hashtags #WorldFoodSafetyDay and #GFSIbirthday. A selection of submissions will be shared at the GFSI Conference 2020 in Seattle.
