How accreditation delivers a safer world is the core theme of this year’s World Accreditation Day, celebrated on 9th June. The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) co-established this initiative with the aim to bring the importance of accreditation to the forefront across the globe.

The GFSI recognition process focuses on the management and content of food safety certification programmes; we do not carry out assessments of Conformity Assessment Bodies/Certification Bodies. Yet they are key to the consistent implementation of the GFSI-recognised Certification Programmes. GFSI believes that accreditation of these Certification Bodies is essential to ensuring consistency in their practices and ultimately the credibility of certification. Besides, the primary function of the IAF is to develop a worldwide programme of conformity assessment which reduces risk for business and consumers by assuring them that accredited certificates may be relied upon. This is why the GFSI Benchmarking Requirements include the need for accreditation of Certification Bodies by signatories of the IAF MLA.

In April 2018, the IAF and GFSI announced a new partnership in which they committed to continuing their efforts to reinforce collaboration for the benefit of consumers around the world. Ensuring the harmonization of accreditation practices across the GFSI-benchmarked food safety certification programmes and continuously improving the GFSI Benchmarking Requirements and the benchmarking process is at the core of the agreement. Enhancing food safety, ensuring the protection of consumers, and guaranteeing better cost efficiency throughout the food supply chain remain central to the IAF and GFSI objectives.

In October 2018, an IAF Business Improvement Forum will be held in Singapore which will bring stakeholders together to discuss the benefits of accreditation, in line with the goal of delivering safe food for consumers worldwide. The half-day forum will bring food safety stakeholders together in lively panel discussions, supported by audience engagement, to share best practices, promote the benefits of accredited certification, and address challenges, gaps and opportunities for improvement to enhance food safety and conformity assessment.
